Serendipity — defined as the occurrence of fortunate discoveries made unexpectedly — is widely regarded as fundamental to scientific advancement (Makri, 2023). This article examines multiple dimensions of the serendipity phenomenon. It provides an overview of key definitions, examples of serendipitous discoveries, and their taxonomies, and considers whether such discoveries arise purely from randomness or from identifiable preconditions. Diverse examples from a range of fields are discussed.

Both social (e.g., systems theory and networks) and psychological (e.g., the serendipitous mindset, neuroscience, and brain plasticity) prerequisites are analyzed, with the argument that favorable conditions for serendipity can be cultivated, as it is not an entirely random phenomenon.

The article further explores whether the capacity to recognize and leverage serendipitous occurrences can be enhanced, and if so, through which mechanisms. It examines the relationship between serendipity and divergent thinking, as well as neuroscientific perspectives that identify brain plasticity as a critical factor.

The conclusions propose directions for future research, including the development of methods to enhance the mind’s capacity for serendipity and approaches for its systematic assessment.
